Gas smell not just in trunk 900 1995

I have a Volvo 960 '95 edition with about 55,000 miles on it.

Recently, there's been a really strong gas smell in the car. I've read some other posts on this board about this problem particular to the trunk, but my smell seems to permeate not only the trunk, the main cabin, and all the surrounding space. I think that it might originate in the air ducts as the problem seems to get better with the air conditioning set to 0.

I'm not really a car mechanic (get almost everything done in a shop), so I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and knows what it will take to fix it. The smell of gas is not the nicest thing to wake up to every morning!

Not to mention the fact that my A/C can only do subzero and SUPER HOT temperatures. But the people at my Volvo shop said I'd just have to live with that... =(
