Power Steering Pump Faulty?

I did indeed flush the system via the return line. OK, so I'll try to do this right at the steering rack. Would you know of a few pictures/illustrations online to get me familliarized with the lines? Also, you indicate that I should let the system drain, then turn the wheel lock to lock, and then refill. Won't I be ruining my pump then by using it on empty? My Haynes manual indicates not to run the pump without any liquid in the system. And as a last question, my Volvo manual says to use ATF (as do many users here on the forum), why do you suggest power steering fluid?

Thanks again.
