Auto Burnt Fluid!!! 200

Ok, I've got an 86 240dl with the Borg-warner auto. Started acting funny last night leaving my friends house. It was revving high, not shiftin, jumping up to revs. Pulled it into the garage and checked the fluid it was burnt brown. A pal from work told me matter-of-factly that my clutches were toast. The thing has 289,000 miles on it, so I am not surprised, but I really dont want to pull that engine again. Any insight?...
Thanks,
Josh
