What causes knocking?

I am looking at a 92 740 Turbo that has a bad knock. What are the likely causes? The owner says it needs a new engine. I have a bad habbit of buying cars that need work. My wife loves it 'cause we get a good car for cheap, but holy crap are they alot of work to get them running right.
