1996 960 Sedan Starting problem

Sorry, DanR, but

1. What is a PNP switch?
2. And why does it keep failing?
3. And what exactly am I doing by moving the gear selector that many times that finally allows the car to start?
4. Can I bypass, jumper or remove this switch so problem will not continue?
5. Why is it worse when it's cold?
6. And, do I need to have the key turned all the way toward the ignition point while I am cycling the gear knob or just turned on to the ACC (first click) spot?

Thanks,

M.P.
