1986 740Ti 4 cylinder 230Bft..won't start. It just wouldn't start one night at work. There were no previous symptoms, except a slightly rough idle that developed recently. I read the FAQs. The outside air temperature is not a factor. Here are more facts:
.It does turn over with the starter motor.
.Gas is pumping during the start. The pumps are running while the engine turns over. It is not a lack of gas problem. I also did the relay jumper thing. The pumps are fine. The pump relay is fine. To be sure I replaced it with a good one.
.I checked all fuse box fuses.
.I'm getting spark at the coil during start, but no spark from the distributor
.I replaced the high tension wire between the coil and the distributor
.I checked that spark is getting through the high tension wire by hooking a grounded spark plug to the end of it.
.I replaced the distributor cap and rotor.
.I have 12 v voltage at the coil leads with key on
.The tachometer bounces during the start, which, I read in the FAQ, indicates that the hall sensor is working.
.I replaced the power stage on the fender with one from a bone yard. It's the same Boch part number
.I checked all hoses for breaks. There were none.
Questions:
Could the ignition control module be bad (this has the EZK ICM)?
Is it possible to put the distributor back on the wrong way with the offset on the key?
Why is power getting through the coil high tension wire, but not through the distributor (a new distributor and rotor)?
What is wrong here?
Thanks in advance
