Is rod knock likely at 106K?

While unlikely, it is certainly possible.

Can you see any signs that the head has been removed? I see a lot of blown head gasket posts. Enough water in a cylinder can cause havoc.

What does the noise do when the engine gets warm? If it goes away, that is better than if it gets worse.

Our '90 744 Turbo was noisy when we got it 80,000 miles ago. The technician who checked it out said "It has a typical low end noise" Our NA '88 745 GLE makes no similar engine noise. Both have about 230,000 miles on them.

I have seen posts about piston slap in turbos.
