Wierd Cold Starting Problems

You should not tear into anything until you diagnose the problem. Assuming plugs, wires cap rotor are in good condition, throttle body clean, right? After that first step when no start occurs is to know if you have spark or not. If yes you then want to know if fuel pumps are running.

Possibilties for the way you described the problem could be fuel pump relay, radio supression relay (needs to be resoldered), failing hall sensor or power stage. Before going anywhere else make sure you have spark and fuel. during the no start condition does the tach bumb up slightly while you are attempting to start?
