Car bucks when decelerating (and sometimes at cruise) 200

Hi guys...

Having a peculiar problem with an '88 DL. When I let off the throttle in the lower gears (problem most evident in 2nd gear), the car bucks violently until about 2000rpm, below which it is smooth as silk. No problems when accelerating, however. Any ideas?

This is unrelated (perhaps not?), but sometimes when I've been cruising at highway speed for an extended period of time (>1.5 hours) the engine will cut out at 5 second intervals. Tach drops to zero and then immediately shoots back up to cruising rpm, every ~5 seconds. Only way to remedy this problem is to shut the engine off for 10-15 minutes and restart. Talk about intermittent...this may occur three or four times in one day, and then not again for a month or longer.
TIA.
