Reasons for disabling your daytime running lights (not allowed in Canada!)

As you noted, in Canada a DRL system (either full or reduced intensity) is mandatory and the 940 light switch used here does not have the screw setting found on the U.S. cars. A simple option for those intent on defeating this is to put in the older 740 style light switch (the one with only 4 terminals on the back). No re-wiring is necessary. With that switch, when it's in the Park or On position you will have DRL, but when set to Off the lights actually stay off. Personally I believe in DRL, but when you're idling at the curb it's just plain stupid. The cost of the exterior lights burning out a little quicker and the slightly shortened battery life doesn't bug me near as much as all the dash lights that burn out. They're difficult to replace, the majority are only available from Volvo and they cost almost as much as a halogen headlamp bulb. About the only things you can do to help are to keep the dash light intensity a little lower and make sure your Volvo club dues are paid so you get a parts discount.
