Temp sensor on block 700 1987

Quick question - which of the two sensors on the driver's side of the engine block is the sensor for the engine temperature guage on the instrument cluster? There are two senders that look like contenders and I'm wondering whether it is the one that is lower and toward the front of the car or higher and further toward the back of the block. The wiring receiver on the former one crumbled apart when replacing the engine wiring harness - even the little metal tabs broke off - any special instructions that I need to know in order to replace it? For now I'm just driving around with any temp readings.

Thanks
