740 GL transmission noise whining!!! 700

I have an 89 740 GL. It has 190K miles. i have noticed a whining noise coming from between the front seats. It gets louder while driving and almost sounds like a siren. I have heard that this may be a carrier bearing in the drive shaft. Is this correct? Or do I need to replace something else in the transmission? Does anyone know the procedure for the carrier bearing replacement, or the corresponding procedure for a different problem to which this sound can be attributed?
