No Spark on '91 245 200 1991

Another post reminded me of a question that I'd like to post to the assembled wisdom of the Brickboard.

18 months ago, my '91 245 refused to start as I tried to leave my office at midnight. With no tools, I was only able to determine that I had no spark.

After two days, and several attempts to start it. I got my tool box, manual, and voltmeter to the office, and proceeded to run the prescribed diagnosis.

When I hit the key to run the first check, the car started. It has started faithfully every time for the past 18 months.

This would be fine except that my daughter will be starting to use this car soon, so I am giving a lot more thought to reliability.

Any thoughts on what the culprit may have been?
