Has anyone had a differential sieze up on a 240?

Hello I purchased my 1982 GLT new and it had a noisy gear whine at 100K. At 200K it started knocking and growling LOUDLY! I pulled it apart and the pinion & carrier bearings were shot! Bearing prices were over $200. (at the time) so I purchased a good used rear axle assembly for $150. and I'm approaching 300K at this time. Your noise could be the pinion gear moving in and out or the ring gear carrier bearings moving side to side.I drove mine knocking & grinding/howling for 1 year/12K miles with no problem except the noise!
