manual transmission 200 1989

Help. My '89 240 DL sedan with 5 speed manual transmission will not downshift into first gear unless I come to a complete stop and push the shifter hard. I'm having similar difficulties downshifting into second gear. The transmission does not make any grinding sounds, reverse and all the other gears are very easy to shift into. I bought this car brand new, it is garaged and has never been abused. The car has 157K on it, the drivetrain is original and I have never had any problems with it.

So far, I have adjusted the clutch (the clutch feels fine), changed the trans fluid using ATF type F(the original fluid was dirty but not bad looking) and checked the shifter bolts for tightness. I'm at the point that I may need to bring it to a Volvo garage for repair.

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
