Are all J-type Overdrives basically the same?

Not quite! There are some differences and you are going to run smack dab into the middle of them all.

The 83 uses a different spline array on the input into the OD from the 76 and there may also be a difference on the output shaft. Valves are swappable if swapped as a unit.

What you use depends upon what it is going into. The cases are the same with a relief valve dropped from the front case in newer models with the incorporation of an improved operating and relief valve combination. As long as that newer valve combination is used, the old relief valve if present can stay put without concern.

The Sprague clutch and the planetary/sun gear combination need to stay together depending upon what vehicle you are rebuilding for.

The bearings are swappable as is the sliding member assembly. The annulus (outout bell) may need to move if the output flange needs to be different and the splines are different between the flanges. If this is moved, the Sprague clutch needs to change to mate with the input shaft.

Valves and such can be used in either as long as the whole valve unit is swapped. This is particularly important when using the relief valve and operating valve from different units.

You are in for some work so proceed carefully. If IPD cannot help you over some difficulties, feel free to ask. I do have a text file that describes some tips to minimize potential problems during dis-assembly and re-assembly. It is not a complete how to but might be of some help.
