Wagon tailgate squeaks, how to fix?

My 245 sqeeked something awful when I first got it. I found the tailgate was not centered in its opening. By removing the little rubber bumpers on the edge of the tailgate and loosening the hinge bolts in the roof, I recentered the tailgate. Then I tightened the hinge bolts, remounted the rubber bumpers and adjusted them for a snug fit in the opening. All squeeks were gone. HOWEVER... the old rubber gasket was too stiff to adjust to the new position and now I have some leaks.
