Anyone ever test a new engine coolant temp. sensor and find it bad? 200 1993

I just bought a new engine coolant coolant temperature sensor (for ECU not gauge) for my 93 245 I always test these kind of things before I install them and did this one by suspending the tip in water and varying the temperature and reading the resistance w/ a DVOM. The reading were way off the graph in the Bentley manual. Anyone ever do this and find a bad one? How close to the specs did you get? The one I tested was made by OEM (that the company's name - any other brands tested? Thanks.
