Turbo - How much end play is acceptable?? Garrett T3 ’90 760 Turbo 700

Good Morning Guys,
First I would like to THANK YOU ALL for the extremely helpful advice < it has worked wonders on both my cars and confidence.
I am new to the turbo’d Volvos, and in my efforts to clean, tune an eradicate problems with this recent purchase (’90 760 Turbo 198k), I have been presented with a question – how much end play is acceptable/normal on a Garrett T3. At idle I can sometimes hear an ever so slight oscillating noise from the turbo. Holding a long screwdriver against the turbo and my ear simultaneous reveals a slight amplification of same noise. It doesn’t sound like a dry bearing; more so like a subtle oscillating vibration. The blades spin smoothly by hand, and while the end play is noticeable, the blades do not contact the inner surfaces of the unit < close mind you, but no touch (end play maybe 1/16th inch at very best. Turbo blades show little wear except maybe one very, very small nick in a blade - about the size of a pin point. Expel tube from turbo to intercooler shows oil residue, but consumption is not a serious issue. About ˝ quart usage in 3000 miles, including slight drip from turbo return line.
Second question: What is the consensus on turbo units, Does the Mitsubishi or the Garrett have a better reputation? Understanding that treatment and maintenance go a long way…
Thanks a Million - in advance!!!
Craig Wisconsin
