narrow better than wide? why?

Take this example. Longer, wider skis make you go faster on snow. A narrow tire will cut through the snow and get to the pavement easier than a wide tire simply because there is less snow underneath a narrow tire. It is easier to hydro-plane with wide tires than with narrow tires for the same reason. I don't know if you have noticed, but big 18 wheelers (which have a lot more weight per square inch of tire in contact with the road) cut right through the snow and leave tracks of exposed pavement in their wake.

There is certainly a limit to this. Narrow bicycle tires on a car wouldn't be good.
