Why not work the problem backwards and...

find out what it would cost you to have a Pick-A-Part or rebuilt tranny and exhaust installed in the car and decide what the car would then be worth to you (Bluebook at www.kbb.com or www.napa.com in mind).

I used to buy 30 day warantied used trannies for $75 ($175 if they pulled it) from my local U-Pull-It yards for any car make or model, but some gouge for import cars. If you can install it yourself (or have it reasonably done) they are a better deal than paying $1200-2000 to have yours rebuilt.
