No Gas Filter 84 240 is this Possible 200

My 84 appears not to have a gas filter, is this possible and why did Volvo not put one in originally, I have had the car since then. Should I put one in just prior to the carb? I know this sounds like a silly question. I'm wondering if this will help a problem I'm having which is the car starts fine but then after a short run or when it sound like it's running slow slow with no pickup idle it will stall for a few seconds then pickup.
