Voltmeter hook-up. Best location?

You will notice some voltage drop compared to directly on the alternator no matter where you hook it. Use the gauge that you will be using full time and temporarily connect it to the alternator and note the reading. Next go to various other hookup points (without changing the engine speed or the electrical load on the alternator) and note any difference. This way when you plug it into the butt lighter you can add the 1.5v or whatever the difference was to come up with the correct voltage.
