My 92-960 has a CV joint at the diff.

Thanks Robert,

I did read all the info there was at this site but had no luck. Here is an interesting part, when I was shimming I kept a record of all the positions tried. At one of the positions the vibration was almost gone but I thought if I shim more I might get rid of it. Unfortunately the next set of washers made it much worse and when I tried going to the best case I could not duplicate it.

Later when I took off the shaft out of the car I found that the bolts are of the same length and when I took off the shaft I marked all the parts including the bolts. While there is no doubt in my mind that the shaft is sensitive to geometry, I think that the amount of side play is also critical and not very predictable. The other thing that is interesting is the orientation of the yokes on the transmission part of the shaft. The shaft yoke at the transmission is 90 deg. out of phase with the shaft yoke at the mid support. This is contrary to all I have read. A dealer fixed a rear main and diff seals so they took off the shaft but I do not think that they needed to split it into two pieces which is the only way to get the yokes out of phase. So my point is that the factory assembled the shaft in this manner. The vibration was there before the dealer touched it.

I tried shimming up and down up to ¼ of an inch. Do you think I need to try more?
