back fires sometimes? with puffs of black smoke? 700 1990

Hello bricksters!
Please help!
I have a 90 740ti. My brick backfires somtimes when i let off the gas. It does'nt happen all the time? And just recently Its starting to idle rough with a really rich smell with little puffs of black smoke. The idle drops almost to complete stall but never happened yet. It does have a new idle vale. Could the TPS be off a little? I did remove the TPS and check it in the summer and its OK but maybe I did'nt re-install it correctly. I did check the 700faqs but I doe'nt know where to start?
