so are they ALL prone to water leaks?

I don't think the year matters much as to whether they are leaky or not. My 1988 (Now I'm certain of the year!)240 GL sedan that I bought on eBay was found to have a leaky bonded windshield, after collecting it and driving 120 miles home. Investigating further showed that the winshield surround was corroded due to the leak, and looks like it could be sorted out, but not cheaply. Two days after getting it home, the car sits outside my house like a Dark Blue beached whale, and I have lost all of my enthusiasm for it, and have not driven it since. I may get some quotes to have it repaired but it is just as likely it will be in the breakers' yard by the new year.

Never buy a car on eBay. The seller's idea of 'very good' condition will differ markedly from yours. My idea of 'very good' condtion does not include a fiberglassed-up rust hole in both rocker panel front ends, a rusty and leaking windshield surround, almost slick rear tyres and numerous (minor but irritating) wiring bodges. I was told that it only had a tiny scratch on one rear wheel well which would polish out. I have never been able to polish out a dent... Basically, you are buying from a photo and a description, almost buying blind. The camera does lie. You have been warned.

P.S. Does any British member want to buy a cheap and mobile 240GL? £50 with 7 months MOT! Mail me on jamesanness@dog.com
