1988 740 Turbo purchase 700

Hi all;
I am looking at purchasing an 88 740 turbo for my son, as his first car. The vehicle has 260 000 kilometers on it (about 1700000miles) and doesn't seem too bad a car, especially as the asking price is only $1000Cdn (about 600USD). Is there anything I need to watch out for? If the turbo is shot, will the car still run decently in non-turbo mode? I have a 79 760 with a V6 and a 960 with a straight 6 as well as a couple of P1800s, but have never had anything to do with a turbo. How reliable are they?
