Little orange arrow 200 1987

As I was driving my daughters 240 automatic..I suddenly felt the car down shift.
I pushed that little button on the shift knob and it didn't do anything. The arrow in the dash is on. Any thoughts on this ? Are we going to damage the car if we continue to drive it like this ? Is this an urgent fix thing??? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance !! HAPPY HOLIDAYS
