Three weeks ago my 240/83 started running like crap. Immediately assumed bad air mass meter and installed rebuilt unit. In so doing, discovered an exhaust leak at header connection had been pumping exhaust into my preheat hose, which I later discovered was always open due to worn out air box valve. Soot had infultrated right through my million mile K&N air filter from IPD, coating inside of air meter and intake manifold. Cleaned air box, installed new filter, and fixed exhaust leak while installing air mass meter. Still ran like crap. Installed new rotor, cap, spark plugs, and new oxygen sensor for good measure. Seemed to run better, esp. at high speeds, but would not idle well at all. Plugs would foul quite quickly, drastically effecting performance. Checked oil and found level to be high. Drained some off, assuming I had over filled it during recent oil change. Changed plugs and drove around to "clean everything out". Plugs kept fouling, would run alright at high rpms but stall at stop signs, etc.
At this point I checked oil again and found it high again. Drained it all off and smelled strong odor of gasoline. Began seeking advice in earnest. Various sources suggested the following: bad ECU, bad fuel pressure regulator, leaky injectors; bad FI temp sensor; bad idle valve; and week coil. Got some used ECU's and swapped them out: no change. Installed used fuel pressure regulator with some improvement detected. Having replaced air mass meter with rebuilt unit, still assumed it to be good.
Knowing inside of intake manifold to be contaminated with oil and soot, I took the whole thing off and cleaned it thoroughly. I also replaced the following: FI temp sensor, idle valve; air box valve; preheat hose; ignition coil; coolant thermostadt(high temp). Cleaned oxygen sensor(solvent, then glass bead). After this work, definitely ran better but still rich, fouling plugs, and would surge at idle. At this point began suspecting the air mass meter and unplugged it while idling: no change. I then swapped in my old air mass meter and my engine ran perfect. How did I fix my problem? I'm not sure. Did I some how screw up the rebuilt air mass meter, or having installed it early on, before cleaning plugs, fixing exhaust leaks, etc., was it actually my main problem? Please offer some oppinions. Thanks, RDP
