glow plugs

Yes glow plugs need to be replaced periodically, If you're not sure when it was done last, they are probably due. Make sure you get the correct ones (fast glows ) for that year.

Also make sure to run a good crancase flush before next oil chenge, you may be loosing compression due to sticky rings, which will make it difficult to start when cold.
