Was 1971 a good year for the 164? 140-160

Does anybody here own a 1971 164? I owned a '71 142 years ago and would like to get a 164 assuming that the interior is identical (horizontal speedo - loved that thing!) as is the rear end, but has the bigger engine and funky nose.

Mechanically, what should I look out for? After doing some research here in the archives, it seems like I should go for the manual tranny with OD (M410?), but there is debate over FI vs. carbs. I'm assuming the 164E wasn't available until 1972. Some say the stock carbs left something to be desired.

Guess I'm looking for some reflections from the 164 crowd out there on what they like and dislike about them, especially the 1971 year.

Thanks much.
