Maybe a Simple Alternator Question?

This is correct. The alternator in your car works on the principle of rotating a core of metal wire inside a magnet, thus creating electricity. The revs of your engine will determine the revs of the core and thus the amount of electricty produced. When you are idling, the revs are not enough to produce enough electricty. The car will keep on running, but the levels you are getting are accurate.
