Volt guage in the RED, High side!!

A bad connection of the black ground wire from teh case of the alternator to the engine block is very common and will give transiently very high voltages although they do not last long. BTDT recently. I had the wire loose in a crimp connector (spliced) and saw the voltage jump high and then run low.
