how hard to replace an m47 with an m46? 700 1989

I have a noisy m47 transmission. I previously owned a 1986 740 gle with an m46 transmission that travelled 380,000 km before I handed it off to somebody else. Mind you, first gear sychro was long gone, and the transmission liked to pop out of second in stop-an-go traffic. But the overdrive was virtually silent. Is it a big deal to replace an m47 with an m46? This would allow me to broaden my search a little more, and the m46 seems to be the stronger of the two transmissions.
