Do you think I damaged the alternator? 700

I towed my car to a mechanic to have the starter changed, cause the car does not start or jump started.
When I drove the car back from the mechanic, all the lights becoming dim, and it died because run out off power. I tested the battery it is very low. and
I have to recharge it and drive the car back to the mechanic, without any inspection, he told me you dash lights do not come on, so it is your alternator brush. As far as I know the car never has any alternator problem. and why it is at faulty after he working on it?
I am also thinking about myself as a cause. The day before I have the car towed to the mechanic, I checked the starter by myself. I checked the wiring twice, but unfortunately the second time when I check it I did not disconnect the battery cables. One guy told me, if I do not disconnect those cables before I disconnect the starter, I may end up as damaging my alternator. IS THIS TRUE?

Thank you all.
