Oil Separator/Breather Box 200

Regarding 1981 242, 4-cylinder non-turbo. I’m still digging toward the clogged oil separator/breather box to replace it. I’m almost there. I read that there is a tube running from the separator down into the oil pan, and that this tube should not be pulled out too far or else the oil pan will have to be removed to reposition it. How far can I safely pull this tube out? I’m guessing I might have to pull it out a little in order to release it from the separator itself. Can anyone help me on this detail because one day soon I will have removed and moved enough stuff to actually unbolt the separator. Thanks for all the good advice so far on this adventure. Doug PS: Sorry if this message gets posted twice accidentally. Our local service is having server problems and I'm never quite sure if things go out.
