weird heater behavior - '97 960 900 1997

Hi,

I am observing weird heater behavior in my '97 960 sedan (80K miles) in the last few days. The heater is blowing hot and cold air alternately and unpredictably. This happens after the fan blows hot air initially and then it slows down after sometime and blows hot and cold. The fan knob setting is in auto though I see this behavior when it is set to 1-5 also. Sometimes, I get hot/warm air when I accelerate, though not always.

I checked the FAQ but didn't see this problem described. I have no idea what could be causing this and is the first time I am observing this problem. Last 3 winters, the heater worked fine.

Any insight into this problem would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
