can you retrofit an RPM sensor to a hall-equipped volvo? 700 1988

I've been wondering if you can retrofit an RPM/speed sensor to a volvo that originally came with a hall sensor. I have an 88 740 GLE that has a dead hall sensor and instead of buying a new distributor, I'd like to see if the RPM sensor could work in its place...

...anyone try this yet?
