81' 240 electrical problem 200 1981

My 81 240 died today. There were no prior symtoms of a problem. When I Went to start it today, IT WAS AS IF THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. IT DOES NOT TURN OVER. I ATTEMPTED TO BOOST IT BUT NOTHING. NEXT I CHECKED THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AND IT WAS FINE (12 v). THERE ARE SOME OTHER SYMPTOMS THAT SEEM STRANGE TO ME. IF I SET THE KEY TO ACC. AND TURN ON THE HEATER FAN TO LOW IT WORKS OK BUT IS I TURN IT UP ANY HIGHER, THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SEEMS TO CUT OUT SUDDENLY. THE SAME THING SEEMS TO HAPEN WHEN ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES MORE CURRENT IS TURNED ON. WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND DOME LIGHT ON I DID SOME TESTS. IF I ATTEMPT TO START THE CAR, THE DOME LIGHT GOES OUT. WHEN TURN THE KEY BACK TO THE OFF POSITION THE DOME LIGHT SLOWLY GETS BRIGHTER THEN SUDDENLY BRIGHTENS TO ITS NORMAL STATE. THE SAME THING HAPPENS WHEN I TURN THE HEADLIGHTS ON AND OFF OR THE FAN AS STATED ABOVE. IT IS AS IF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WORKS FINE FOR LOW CURRENT APPLICATIONS BUT ONCE A CERTAIN THRESHHOLD IS REACHED EVERYTHING CUTS OUT.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN IDEA AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM MAY BE?
ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
