i failed emmisions...any suggestions?

The cap and rotor should be the Bosch orange/red/brown color. You can get a cap and rotor for about $5 ea from various supporters of the brickboard. At that price, I don't see a reason to go with a non Bosch unit. I'm sure it's not the sole cause of you failing emissions, but it couldn't help.

If you've got the original (or one of an unknown age) cat you should probably just consider it worth replacement.

If a t-stat doesn't solve it, it may be time to bust out the multimeter and go check the ECU's coolant temp sensor. If the ECU doesn't think the engine has warmed up (it's a separate sensor from the gauge one), it will richen the fuel mixture (and be hard to start when the car's warm). But I would suspect you'd see higher CO levels and lower NOx levels.. then again I'm no smog expert :)
