Front end noise 240 200

I'm suspecting I may have a pretty bad brake failure
up front on my 240, my wife tells me one the phone
yesterday that the car is making a loud noise on deceleration.
I get home, and the car is making a loud metallic like
ringing as we drive down the street, and upon stopping,
a loud decelerating noise is the only way to describe
it. It's not really a grinding, but more like the sound
a bus makes when it comes to a stop, loud, whining that
gets louder as you come to a stop. My question is,
is it my front brakes or possibly something else? Is
it safe to drive 25 miles to the Volvo mechanic?
Thanks to any who can help with answers. HT
