George from OK actually puts his finger on it, the stuff is really rubber electrician's tape avail at Home Depot and other elect. supply places though in larger amounts than you might (think) you need. Might also be 1" width, a bit wide for wrapping ends of auto connectors and such.

I actually found the stuff at Auto Zone (buried at floor level) in the "electrical" section in Kent, Ohio at least 5 yrs. ago and have been through rolls of it over the years. For what you need (simple repairs not recoating a 20 ft. long wiring loom), I'd suggest trying them, the guy at the counter may never have heard of the stuff because like many useful things, the avg. Joe just isn't aware it exists. 5 USD a roll or so.

Pkg. says, "if you only have to carry one tape, this is it". Not an overstatement, even in these days of hype.
