How do you know when OD solenoid is bad? 200

Hi I have a 85 245ti automatic that just stopped going into overdrive. It had no problems before and it happened one day. Then it started to work two days later and stopped again. When I hit the OD button the light comes on and it makes a click but nothing happens. Is it a loose wire or is my OD soleniod bad. I went under the car and followed the wire from the solenoid to a connector under the car. Then there is only one stripped wire coming out of the connector. Is there supposed to be more? what is wrong with my car?
