89 240 stalling when stopping-problem solved? 200 1989

My 89 240 would stall when slowing to a stop-not all the time, but several times a day. It would start right back up.
Yesterday, I replaced the spark plugs and discovered the old ones in my recently bought 240 were very worn. The gap in all of them was between 1.2MM and 1.4 MM. Spec is .7-.8 MM. Since then, the car has not stalled. Could this be the cause? Why? Can someone give me a clue?
TIA
Karl
