I have owned my car for about 9 months now,, I am running out of parts to replace. I have a car that starts, idles fine, runs great for days(35+mpg too!), then sputters to a stop(temp reads normal). After a bit the car will fire-up while cranking the starter/let off the starter/motor sputters and dies.---acts like the ignition tumbler---towed home--installed new ign-assembly from IPD---seemed to fix it.---week later, sputters to a stop AGAIN!---check spark _ZAP!_*#(@)....... Spark good (and strong!)(I have a tack indication LED on my dash signaling "HT" spark also)---same symptoms, fires-up while cranking only---but I noticed it kick a little when I turned the key past "ign-on"--??--so I did it again- same thing -turns-over(cranking starter)--started toggling ignition on/off/on/off/ect.. and the engine barked to life when turning the ignition back on. still doesn't run w/o toggling the key.---no starter this time,, click from the main and fuel relays (pump 2sec on)---check the "toggling-Start" again. this works to gain RPM's only ,, not running without toggle still ,, then presto it's running... normal running again--??-- so I let it run and charge the battery up for a min. then another clue- the motor had cooled off -and was below normal temp. I sat and waited untill it warmed up, sputter/sputter and dead.. warm then dies.. temp sensor again?--- Towed home again.
I have read t/s articles about the D-jet EFI and being an electrician by trade I figured that I could use my scope and meter to chase this problem. First I should back up a little and give a short list of EFI parts relpaced for various reasons over the last nine months:
cold-start injector, thermal-sensor for C/S injector, fuel-pump, trigger-points, Fuel-Injectors(4), manifold pressure Sensor, Fuel-pump relay, main-EFI-relay, thottle-position sensor, Ignition contact assembly(behind key tumbler).
Mods made for trouble-shooting:
Tack(spark inductive p/u)LED dash mounted to replace (1)inst-cluster back-light, Fuel pressure gage (mounted in-line to C/S injector)
Here is what I have found out: 1.the motor runs untill it warms up. 2.the Temp sensor reads near 1000ohms cold/ near 2kohms at temp (normal) 3. bypassed the cold-start valve (no change-except cold idle) 4.good spark(and timing) 5.Then I found something odd--I wired five 3v -super bright LED to poke into the FI connectors, and started the car cold... just as I would expect the C/start injector fired while cranking. and the main 4 took over after that. I let the engine warm up ---sputter.sputter..dead-- I watched the LED's--two at a time then two missing (while the sputtering was happening--then none at all(sputter..dead)
Has anyone seen this before ?
Is there more things to check? I have all the power for the EFI control. wire for wire all the signals look good(Thanks Ed for the schematics)(and Vclassics for the T/S article) ---Eric Rossman--- 73/145/b20f --sorry for the long story, hard to explain--
