crumbling wire insulation 200

While testing my AMM, I took a closer look at some of the wiring in the engine bay of my '83 245gl b23f. the insulation on the positive wire from the coil was crumbly, and the wire itself had some oxidization on it. I know wiring both wiring harnesses and AMM's get old... I have mearned everything I know about volvos from my dad and you guys here at the brickboard - before I replace the wiring harness, which vital wires should I test, and how do I test them with my multi-meter? (Dad doesn't have a clue on this one)

thanks a million!
