I decided to inspect the condition-unknown-but-in-the-trunk-and-not-the-trash-so-they-had-it-for-some-reason M41 i have. I tried to spin the flange in a couple of different gears (I managed to get it in 3rd, 4th and reverse by sticking a screwdriver into the hole in the extended short-shift shifter rod thingy) and it worked fine so I pulled the drain plug and found SHAVINGS! Sharp, angry shavings of metal on the magnet. Is this even worth second-guessing, or should I just pull it apart and see what's up before throwing it away in the kitchen trash? Is it possible that the OD just failed and sent shavings everywhere or vice-versa? From what I've gleaned from this mystery tranny found in the trunk of an auction-acqired 122s, the car itself USED to have OD, but not factory-installed. Someone put it in and then took it out and put in an M40. Perhaps they didn't correctly configure the 4th gear lockout and put it in reverse with the OD engaged? I've heard doing this is certain death, but what exactly happens when reverse is engaged with OD on? Feh. Now I probably have to go the junkyard and pull the M41 out of that smashed 1800...
