intermittant tranny problem 700

can anyone point me in the right direction on what to check? i could be going down the freeway at 65mph, all of a sudden, without touching the gear shift
(auto transmission) my tranny will drop into a lower grear. (the arrow on my dash for city driving pops on. i have to slow down to about 45mph because the engine is overtacking.) this has having several times. i can depress the button
with my thumb but noting happens. eventually, the light with go out when it wants to, and i can resume my speed. any feed-back will be appreciated.
