Engine quit with a 'chug', then no cold start

On my '89 740 Turbo (B230FT) with 119,000 miles....

Just got the engine back together after two months of removal, cleaning, checking , adjusting the intake components. Started it for the first time and, with an adjustment to increase the idle, it ran smoothly for about half an hour.

It was hard to start cold at fist, but I had not been started for two months, either. Had to "give it a little gas" to start it, just like a carbruetted car.

It took throttle and idle retuned beautifully during that run time.

When I was about done with it, I floored the throttle. When the RPM's to about 3,000, the engine quickly choked to a halt. I noticed that the turbo guage stayed in the black, unlike how it climbed into the yellow earlier while revving the engine.

No problem, I thought, because I noticed the "U" shaped hose under the vacuum control device at the front of the turbo was on crooked. I just figured it got loose and sucked in some unmetered air.

So, today I corrected that crooked hose and expected a fine result.

What I got was no cold start. Engine cranks well. Once or twice it even "coughed" like it was going to start. It did give one start, only to die within one second. There is a faint odor of raw gas around the engine after cranking, but I don't detect any leaks. Spark plugs are dry and don't small or look "fouled" from gas.

I read the FAQ thoroughly, but don't see my answer. I will jumper 30 to 87/2 to better test the fuel pump relay.

I do not hear the main fuel pump momentarily when I turn the switch to "ON" prior to starting. I DO hear the pump run and stop after cranking, though. I hear the relay click with the turn of the key.

All wiring, connectors and vacuum hoses are good. New ECT, intake manifold gasket and injector o-rings. Hoses to the idle control valve are on. Other turbo hose plumbing it tight. 3/4 tank of gas.

Ice storm last night, followed by rapid thaw. Could be water in the gas tank, but how would it got in there?

Spark plugs are worn, were sooty (had a clogged PCV system prior) and gapped at .40mm. I cleaned, gapped to .30mm and reinstalled them. FPR is not leaking gas, but I do smell some gas where I pull off the vac hose.
