Proper Tire Inflation Pressure

When driving an older Volvo (I have 5 from '84 to '93) what tire pressure should I use, the one the manufacturer puts on the tire, the one recommended by the tire shop, or the ones Volvo posted on the door? The recommended pressures that are posted on the door by Volvo are from a number of years ago and I'm sure tire technology has changed since then. I use the Volvo recommended tire size on my cars.
